Аннотация: A symmetric space M carries a transitive action of a Lie group so that it is diffeomorphic to a homogenous space G/H, where G is a connected real Lie group and H is a connected closed subgroup of G. In other words, the group G encodes the symmetries of the manifold M. When G is semisimple, the algebra D(M) of G-invariant differential operators acting, as unbounded operators, on the Hilbert space L^2(M) of square integrable complex functions on M, is commutative. We will explain how one can use representations of G and H to obtain important features of the joint spectrum of D(M). If time permits, we will also discuss the case of sections of bundles over M and the case of locally symmetric spaces. In particular, we will present recent results joint with M. Olbrich.
